L.W. Engebretson, Ph.D

Founder, President, and Chief Investment Officer


Dr. L.W. Engebretson has over 35 years of experience in the securities field. He started his career with seven years as a registered Account Executive in the Beverly Hills office of Dean Witter. By the age of 34, he became Executive Vice-President and Director of Research & Portfolio Management of an Exchange-member firm in Los Angeles, where he was also a Registered Investment Advisor.

At the age of 37, Dr. Engebretson founded ECM Investment Management, Inc. as an investment counsel firm, specializing in securities analysis and investment management. Over the decades, he has built a reputation as an economist and securities analyst. His economic forecasts have appeared in national publications at many times since 1975. Years of diligent work and insightful investing have made him the firm’s largest client. He and the entire staff consider the stewardship of our client’s capital a calling that transcends work.

Dr. Engebretson holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Finance from California State University Long Beach, and Masters and Doctorate degrees in Business Administration from Valley Christian University.

Earl Beecher, Ph.D, CLU, CFA

Investment Research Analyst and Economic Advisor


Dr. Beecher earned his Ph.D and Master's degrees at UCLA, and his B.A. from the University of Utah. He worked in the UCLA Bureau of Business and Economic Research, then became an economist for the head office of Security Pacific National Bank. Soon thereafter, he became Professor of Finance at California State University Long Beach, where he taught for 33 years. He taught courses that include: Finance, Managerial Finance, International Finance, Investments, Securities Analysis, Accounting, Economics, Money & Banking. He's a noted speaker at seminars such as: Risk Management, Estate Planning, Research Methodology, and Fundamental & Technical Stock Evaluation.

  John Engebretson

Operations Manager & Portfolio Analyst


John, son of Dr. L.W. Engebretson, serves as the Information Technology Manager and Operations Manager of the firm. His primary responsibilities include the computer and software business systems, computer-based transaction management, portfolio analysis, account reconciliation, client and SEC reporting, compliance, and Business Continuity/Disaster Recovery planning. He has served in various operations and administrative capacities at ECM since 1996.

Prior to his current position at ECM, John served as a Business Systems Analyst and Programmer at Al Frank Asset Management, at Rockwell International, at Electronic Data Systems, and at Core Asset Management. His technical expertise includes computer platforms, computer networks, programming languages, and applications software packages related to financial trading and database management. He holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Information Sciences from the American College of Computers.
